Resumo
A relação entre padrões alimentares e saúde mental tem vindo a assumir crescente relevância na literatura científica, sendo atualmente reconhecida como um determinante modificável com implicações na prevenção e gestão de perturbações mentais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo sintetizar criticamente a evidência científica disponível sobre a associação entre alimentação e desfechos de saúde mental ao longo do ciclo de vida, incluindo implicações para o envelhecimento saudável, bem como analisar os principais mecanismos biológicos subjacentes. Foi realizada uma revisão integrativa da literatura, com base em estudos publicados entre 2013 e 2025, incluindo ensaios clínicos randomizados, estudos observacionais, revisões sistemáticas, meta-análises e umbrella reviews. A pesquisa bibliográfica foi conduzida nas bases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science e Cochrane Library, tendo sido incluídos 13 estudos após aplicação dos critérios de elegibilidade. Os resultados evidenciam uma associação consistente entre padrões alimentares de elevada qualidade, particularmente a dieta mediterrânica, e melhores indicadores de saúde mental, nomeadamente menor risco e gravidade de sintomas depressivos. Em contraste, padrões alimentares com elevado consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados e perfil pró-inflamatório encontram-se associados a maior risco de depressão e ansiedade. A evidência proveniente de ensaios clínicos randomizados sugere ainda que intervenções alimentares podem contribuir para a redução dos sintomas depressivos e potencialmente para a prevenção da recorrência. Os principais mecanismos biológicos envolvidos incluem inflamação sistémica, modulação da microbiota intestinal, stress oxidativo e regulação da neurotransmissão. Apesar da consistência dos resultados, subsistem limitações metodológicas. Conclui-se que a qualidade da dieta constitui um determinante relevante da saúde mental.Referências
