Resumo
O voluntariado é uma temática amplamente discutida na literatura, sendo que os benefícios inerentes à sua prática são consensuais e aceites. A relação entre voluntariado e envelhecimento também não é nova, sendo que muitas vezes esta relação é apresentada como potenciadora do denominado envelhecimento ativo. No entanto, as causas para o abandono do voluntariado ocupam um espaço menor na literatura, sendo que particularmente o abandono do voluntariado sénior precisa, ainda, de ser explorado. O principal objetivo deste trabalho é compreender o que leva um indivíduo sénior a abandonar a sua prática de voluntariado, para tal pretende-se identificar e analisar as motivações dos voluntários para o abandono do voluntariado, a importância do voluntariado, o envelhecimento e a religião. Este objetivo é desenhado num contexto específico, sendo que foram selecionados três grupos distintos para a recolha de informação. As principais conclusões referem vários benefícios resultantes da prática do voluntariado e referem que são as causas de natureza organizacional que representam um papel de maior relevância nas justificações do abandono.
